Empowering Young Skin: Dr. Angela Casey

March 18, 2025

We’re so excited to spotlight Dr. Angela Casey, the founder of Bright Girl Skin Care, a brand that’s all about helping young girls start healthy skin routines early. Dr. Casey, a dermatologist and mom, saw the need for a fun, clean skincare line that gets teens and tweens excited about taking care of their skin. We chatted with her about her journey, the inspiration behind Bright Girl, and what makes the brand different from the rest.

Tell us a bit about yourself!

Family first: my husband and 3 teen/tween daughters are #1 in my world. My work as a Dermatologist/Mohs surgeon comes next. I grew up in Kentucky, the daughter of two incredible parents: my father, a renowned infertility specialist who shaped that specialty in terms of research, innovation, and teaching; and my mother, who showed kindness, caring, and love through every interaction. Those formative years instilled confidence, a strong work ethic, and a passion to do my part to make the world a better place. Education is a priority, and it’s at the heart of Bright Girl: equipping our young people with the knowledge and understanding of how to care for their skin. When I’m not working or with family, I love strength training, taking long walks (on my own or with my husband and/or daughters), reading (both fiction and health-related books), and really good coffee. I’m a homebody and my favorite way to spend downtime is just being at home with the family.

What inspired you to start Bright Girl?

I love my roles as a Dermatologist and Mother. Recognizing that 90% of the skin cancers and damage I treat daily are preventable while struggling to excite my 3 daughters about daily skincare, I saw the entirety of the skin health epidemic and knew that I couldn’t call myself a care provider if I didn’t care enough to do something about it. Daring to stake a skin health movement that could benefit far more people than I could ever treat in my career is a massive risk, but we miss 100% of the shots we never take.

How did your work as a dermatologist - and being a mom - shape the brand?

As a Mohs surgeon (skin cancer specialist), at least once a day I hear from one of my patients who is at my office to have a skin cancer surgically removed “Dr. Casey, I wish I had known how to care for my skin. Back when I was a child, sunscreen wasn’t even around.” This pains me because as a skin cancer specialist, I know that skin cancer is the #1 cancer worldwide (and actually accounts for more cancers than ALL other types of cancers combined.) And I also recognize that it’s one of the most preventable types of cancer. And yet, as a mom (and a Dermatologist-mom), I still struggled to get my own 3 daughters excited about caring for their skin. Sunscreens were “too thick”, lotions were “too sticky”, and the bottle was “too white”...I knew that the only way to get fickle teens/tweens EXCITED about their skincare was to deliver a brand that was EXCEPTIONAL: fun, smart, colorful, engaging. With an experience that would knock their socks off with a sensory experience that was beyond anything that they had tried. And this is what keeps them coming back for more, cementing those important, consistent habits to properly care for their skin.

What makes Bright Girl different from other early-age skincare brands?

Bright Girl is a Dermatologist-created, clean, pH-balanced skincare designed specifically for “young skin” ages 8-24 and targeting the teen and tween market segment. Elevated formulations benchmarked against the best products sold in Dermatology offices, Bright Girl provides its users with a rewarding experience to instill consistent daily skin care practices. Bright Girl combines clinical expertise with excellent formulations, appealing packaging and a complete skincare routine at attainable prices. Bright Girl is one of the few small brands that has undergone independent, 3rd party, objective clinical research trials to prove its efficacy.

Where do you see the brand in a few years?

We are focusing our marketing strategy on growing brand awareness. We have the best teen/tween skincare brand: but the world needs to know about Bright Girl! In a few years, Bright Girl will be the best-selling teen skincare brand on social media and will have an expanded presence in more Dermatology practices. We are so excited to share that Bright Girl will be launching with two separate renowned retail partners in 2025! In a few years, we will be the “go-to” clean, clinical teen skincare brand that is just as appealing to teens as to their moms.

What’s one tip for parents helping their kids start a skincare routine?

Keep it simple. Kids are busy and no one wants a complicated routine. The more streamlined, the more likely kids are to stay consistent. Cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen in the morning. Cleanser and moisturizer at night. Also, listen to your kids: they'll tell you what they prefer. It’s our job as parents to acknowledge that while guiding them in the right direction with product selection.

How should parents talk to their girls about not using serums and other products that can damage their skin at this age?

Having honest, objective conversations about why certain products are not age-appropriate is key. When you can give a reason why (instead of just saying “no” or “because I said so”), girls are much more likely to consider what you share with them. Kids crave structure, and they actually appreciate it when we, as parents, put up guardrails to keep them moving in the right direction. As parents, we are usually the gatekeepers of what comes into our children’s skincare closets: we can fill it with junk or we can fill it with healthy options that are age-appropriate.

What are you most excited about for Bright Girl’s future?

I am so excited about how Bright Girl will change the narrative on skin health and skin aging. We have a tremendous opportunity to make an impact on the skin cancer epidemic by teaching young people the importance of caring for their skin each and every day (i.e. applying sunscreen every morning). Much like the oral health movement that got us all brushing and flossing our teeth, which was started by a single dentist, Dr. Alfred Fones, back in the early 1900s; I believe that a single dermatologist can lead the preventative skin health movement, and this will be Bright Girl’s legacy.

Skincare issues may often arise around this early age - what advice do you have for parents of young girls struggling with these issues that can oftentimes impact self-esteem and confidence?

Listen to your children and validate their concerns. So often, they just need to know that we hear them. So much inflammation in our bodies, and our skin–which contributes to conditions such as acne, redness, and sensitive skin–is not only linked to our skincare but also strongly connected to our diet and other lifestyle choices. Encourage your children to eat a healthy, whole-food-based diet and minimize processed foods. Make sure they are getting enough sleep and exercise. Finally, we will provide them with the skincare that is made for them and will support them through these turbulent years.

Is there anything else you’d like to share with us?

As parents, we need to walk the walk in terms of what we expect of our children. Much of their behavior is modeled based on our actions as parents. Be calm and patient, and live the healthy lifestyle that you want to inspire in your decisions–including applying your sunscreen every single morning.

Dr. Casey’s commitment to educating young people about skin health is truly inspiring, and it’s clear that Bright Girl is on a mission to make skincare easy and accessible for the next generation. We’re excited to see how Bright Girl continues to grow and impact families everywhere. Stay tuned for more on this amazing brand, and be sure to check them out!
